From the Battlefield to the Soil

How VMI and the U.S. Army shaped AZ Soil Solutions

U.S. Army Special Operations Forces alongside Afghan Commandos

“Every mission begins with a foundation.”

Those five simple words have guided nearly every chapter of my life. They shaped me long before AZ Soil Solutions existed, long before I immersed myself in the intricate world of soil biology, trace minerals, and the hidden ecosystem teeming beneath our feet. My journey started at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), not just an institution where I earned a degree, but a forge that tempered my character through unrelenting discipline, unwavering integrity, strict accountability, and a deep commitment to service.

At VMI, leadership wasn’t taught through theory alone. It was lived every single day. Cadets were pushed to lead by example, to accept responsibility even when it was uncomfortable, and to prioritize the success of the team over personal glory. These weren’t fleeting lessons; they became the bedrock of my worldview. VMI’s enduring mission, to produce honorable citizen-soldiers, leaders ready to serve their communities and nation, continues to echo in everything I do today.

Those foundational values traveled with me into my military career, from a young officer in the conventional Army to a Captain serving in the U.S. Army’s Special Operations Forces. One of the most profound privileges of that service was working alongside and training elements of the Afghan National Army Special Operations Command (ANASOC) and the Afghan Commandos. Our role extended far beyond immediate tactical objectives. It was about building capacity, fostering trust, and empowering local forces so they could sustain operations long after American teams rotated out. Training, advising, and enabling partner nations remains one of the core missions of U.S. Army Special Operations Forces, and it taught me a timeless truth about leadership.

Real success isn’t measured by what you achieve in the moment. It’s measured by what continues to thrive and grow long after you’ve stepped away.

You don’t build genuine confidence overnight. You don’t develop capable, self-reliant leaders overnight. And, as I would later discover, you don’t build truly healthy soil overnight either.

Responsibility that outlasts the uniform

When most people hear “Special Operations Forces,” their minds jump to high-stakes missions, rigorous training regimens, and deployments to far-flung corners of the globe. Those elements are real, but what lingers most vividly for me is something quieter and more enduring: responsibility. Leadership, I learned, is about earning trust through consistent actions, mentoring others so they can succeed independently, and laying foundations strong enough to withstand the test of time.

That mindset stayed with me long after I hung up my uniform. When I transitioned into studying soil health, I was struck by how deeply the principles overlapped. Nature operates on the same fundamental rules I had internalized in the military. Healthy plants don’t start with vibrant flowers or lush leaves. They don’t even begin with visible roots. Everything starts underground, with the living, breathing foundation of the soil.

Just as a high-performing team relies on every member contributing toward a shared goal, healthy soil depends on an intricate network of millions of organisms working in harmony: beneficial bacteria, mycorrhizal fungi, earthworms, insects, trace minerals, water, and organic matter. Each plays a vital role. When any part of this system is out of balance, whether through compaction, chemical overuse, or nutrient depletion, the effects ripple upward, weakening crops, landscapes, and entire ecosystems.

From quick fixes to lasting foundations

This parallel fundamentally changed how I approached agriculture, landscaping, and home gardening. I had no interest in developing yet another product promising quick, temporary results that faded after one season. Instead, I wanted to create solutions that empowered people to build resilience and lasting improvement, the kind that compounds over years and decades.

The same way an effective leader invests in the growth of their people, healthy soil invests in the future productivity of the land. Stronger root systems. Healthier trees that better withstand drought and disease. More abundant vegetable gardens. Vibrant, sustainable landscapes. Productive farms that regenerate rather than exhaust the earth. All of it traces back to what lies beneath the surface.

Today, when I speak with homeowners, farmers, landscapers, and gardeners, I see far more than dirt. I see opportunity, the chance to restore what industrial practices and short-term thinking have depleted, to hand off land that is healthier than we inherited, and to create legacies that will support our children and grandchildren for generations.

This vision is the heart of AZ Soil Solutions. It is not merely a business or a line of products. It is the continuation of a lifelong mission rooted in leadership, service, preparation, and the conviction that the strongest futures are built on the strongest foundations.

Soil science, seen through a soldier’s lens

Years after leaving active duty, I found myself in a seemingly unrelated field: soil science. At first glance, it felt like an entirely different universe. But the more I studied, the more the connections became undeniable. The principles of preparation, systems thinking, and long-term stewardship I learned in uniform applied directly to regenerative agriculture and soil restoration.

Healthy soil functions like a well-trained unit. It stores water efficiently during dry periods and releases it steadily. It cycles nutrients naturally so plants can access what they need without synthetic crutches. It hosts a thriving microbiome that protects against pathogens and supports robust growth. When the foundation is strong, everything above ground flourishes, from backyard tomato plants to large-scale crops.

At AZ Soil Solutions, we focus on rebuilding this living ecosystem rather than simply masking symptoms with quick-fix fertilizers. That’s why our Bio Mineral Soil Enhancer combines naturally occurring trace minerals, naturally chelated montmorillonite clay, and beneficial biology. These components work synergistically to improve soil structure, enhance nutrient availability, boost water retention, and promote microbial diversity over time.

Just as a strong leader develops the potential in those around them, healthy soil nurtures everything growing above it. This philosophy influences every decision we make. We reject the “spray and pray” mentality. Our goal is to help families harvest more nutritious food from their gardens, assist farmers in building resilient operations, support landscapers in creating enduring beauty, and ensure future generations inherit soil teeming with life rather than stripped of it.

A mission that continues at home

Today, I no longer wear a uniform, but my sense of mission remains as strong as ever. Each morning I wake up focused on educating others, serving the community, building regenerative solutions, and leaving the land better than I found it. This mission now extends to my own family. Together, we run a proud veteran-owned and family-operated company grounded in the same core values instilled at VMI and honed throughout my Army career: integrity, discipline, service, accountability, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.

Whether I was leading soldiers on patrol, advising partner forces in challenging environments, or now helping a homeowner establish a thriving raised-bed garden, the guiding principle has never changed:

Build the foundation first. Everything else follows.

That is the driving force behind AZ Soil Solutions. The battlefield may have shifted from distant lands to local soils, but my purpose has remained constant. True leadership, and true stewardship, isn’t defined by what you accomplish while you’re present. It’s defined by what continues to grow and thrive because of the foundations you helped establish.

Looking back, the path from the disciplined halls of VMI and the demanding missions of Special Operations Forces to the quiet, regenerative work of soil restoration feels like the most natural progression imaginable. What began as a commitment to building unbreakable teams and leaving lasting impact in challenging environments has evolved into a daily dedication to rebuilding the very foundation of life itself, the living soil beneath our feet. At AZ Soil Solutions, we carry forward those same principles of patience, preparation, integrity, and service. We understand that true strength isn’t flashy or immediate; it’s cultivated over time through consistent care and respect for natural systems.

Whether you’re a homeowner dreaming of a backyard oasis, a farmer seeking greater resilience, or a landscaper committed to beauty that endures, our mission remains simple yet profound: help you build soil so vital and alive that everything growing above it thrives for generations to come. The battlefield may have changed, but the core purpose has not. We are still training, advising, and enabling, only now it’s the land itself we’re empowering. Because in the end, leadership and stewardship are one and the same: they’re both about investing deeply in what will continue to grow long after we’re gone. Thank you for being part of this ongoing mission.
